The Wallet Watch podcast has released its fifth episode of season 7, “Money and Emotions” where hosts Amanda and Jessica chat with Lindsay Bryan-Podvin. Lindsay is a biracial financial therapist, podcast host, speaker, and author of the book “The Financial Anxiety Solution.”

In Lindsay’s therapy practice, Mind Money Balance, she uses shame-free financial therapy to help people get their minds and money in balance. In this episode of Wallet Watch, Amanda and Jessica talk to Lindsay about her book, therapy approach, and most importantly about how emotions play a part in our finances.

Emotions and finances are really intertwined and people can experience all sorts of emotions around money. Lindsay specializes in financial anxiety and sees a lot of emotions that look or sound like anxiety, shame, embarrassment, and guilt. She states that those types of emotions, can impact your relationship with money and personal finances. Lindsay also talks about how those emotions don’t always come from a lack of money or struggling. Negative feelings can come from a lack of knowledge and understanding of finances in general. One thing she wants our listeners to know is that if you are feeling or dealing with any type of financial anxiety or feeling like you don’t understand your finances, you are not alone. We are taught that money is just not something you talk about with other people, but in her opinion you should. You should be discussing money with your family, your partner, even your friends. Sharing can help unpack all of those negative emotions and feelings that surround your money and emotions.
Featured Quote:
“Common feelings I see in my practice are shame, embarrassment, guilt, and worry are all common issues people feel when dealing with financial stress or anxiety. Those feelings are not always caused by a lack of money or trying to make ends meet. There is also a lot of guilt and shame around finances because many of us were never taught about personal finance.” Lindsay Bryan-Podvin
